David Beckham has had much to say about how Lionel Messi signed for Inter Miami, but he recently discussed what he thought before his debut match-winning free kick for the club.
The Argentine ended his long spell in European football after enduring two difficult years with Paris Saint-Germain and joined the Floridian Major League Soccer franchise.
Messi got off to a flying start in America and was influential in the club's first-ever trophy - the inaugural Leagues Cup - where he was named the best player and also won the Golden Boot.
However, injury hampered his season after the September international break with Argentina, with the Herons losing the US Open Cup final and missing out on an MLS playoff spot.
What Beckham thought before Messi's debut goal
The Argentina captain had a 'scripted' beginning to life in the United States. As noted by Sky Sports, he came off the bench and scored a 94th-minute match-winning free kick to win 2-1 against Cruz Azul.
Beckham was pitchside for the game and speaking on the Messi meets America documentary on Apple TV, he disclosed what he was thinking in the moments after the penalty was awarded.
"Free kick on the edge of the box? I saw Leo pick up the ball and move it back a little bit. I almost turned around to my wife and said, 'This is going in'. To see what he did is incredible," he said.
